Some say that human beings have been doing the same things over and over throughout our long history and we can therefore learn lessons by studying the past. Others say, in accordance with the Judeo-Christian way of thinking, that human beings are making progress in a linear manner. Professor Sakamoto will talk about the significance of learning history in a multifaceted manner by listing four examples from the history of ancient Rome.
